Raleigh/Rio: An Artistic Conversation

When: Jan. 31-March 14 2015

If you'd like more art-viewing and less art-walking this wintry First Friday, you can hit four new exhibits at once in the studio and gallery complex Artspace. Fresh off a run at the Mahler Fine Art, local Marty Baird and Rio's Malu Fatorelli show Raleigh/Rio: An Artistic Conversation in Gallery One through March 14. As longtime friends, they display "14 years of art-making on two continents" through drawings, paintings and correspondence. Each artist shows her own work, and the pair collaborates on a site-specific installation. In Gallery Two, Raúl Gonzalez III's Adventures in Drawing (through March 21) bustles with the Boston artist's garish, charismatic characters, influenced by graffiti and other outsider idioms, including illustrations from the graphic novel Lowriders in Space. Gonzalez creates a mural at Artspace's City Market entrance from Feb. 26, and gives an artist talk at noon on Feb. 5. In the Upfront Gallery, Jenny Eggleston's training as a nature illustrator and her love of poetry combine in Fates and Fortunes (through Feb. 28). Lastly, in the Lobby Gallery, Artspace's Regional Emerging Artist in Residence, Meg Stein, shows humorous, unsettling sculptures and installations that draw on surrealist organisms and fairy tale fragments. 6–10 p.m., free, 201 E. Davie St., Raleigh,
