Radio One Family Comedy Hour

When: Sat., July 14, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $25

There's a school of thought that contends that comedy—particularly of the standup variety—is a vehicle for rage and aggression. That's certainly the vein that comics such as Jerry Lewis, Richard Pryor and Louis C.K. have worked. But don't tell that to the funny people of Radio One Family Comedy Hour, which bills its act as "good, clean, family fun." This touring group of comics specializes in uplifting, positive comedy—with the folksy evocation of radio, one wonders if it could be an African-American variation on the whiter-than-white Prairie Home Companion. Radio One host Marcus D. Wiley is described as an "entertainer whose class of comedy surpasses the status quo. Deeply rooted in old-time religion, he offers a contemporary flair on Christian living." Joining him will be Veda Howard, Sylvie "Small Fire" Moore and DL Henry. —David Fellerath
