R. Stevie Moore's official bio claims he has "self-released over 400 cassette and CD-R albums." It's not hyperbole. Since 1976, when Moore released his debut LP, Phonography, on his uncle's label, the "godfather of home recording" has been DIY to a fault, releasing an unending torrent of music on labels ranging from the obscure (New Rose, Cherry Red) to the microscopic (Moore's own RSM Cassette Club). The work covers a fair amount of stylistic ground. One minute, you could be bobbing your head along to a Beatles/ Beach Boys melange; the next, Moore is offering up a sharp and brittle tune that could pass for the work of some long-lost post-punk genius.

Whatever inspired nuttiness Moore cooked up in his home studio, though, only made it out to the world in recorded form. Despite making music for nearly four decades, Moore had never gone on tour. Thankfully, that changes this year, as the 59-year-old wunderkind is going coast to coast and overseas behind the release of his latest album, Advanced. If you're into rarity, attendance is mandatory. —David Raposa
