Considering Kim Deal's work in the Pixies and the Breeders, it would take a minor miracle for Kelley Deal to escape her twin sister's sizable musical shadow. Kelley's latest non-Breeders musical endeavor is R. Ring, a collaboration with Ampline frontman Mike Montgomery. No, it isn't that aforementioned miracle, but it's not meant to be. As their debut single attests, this group is just an outlet for the sort of music that the Deal sisters can't help but make: beguiling but grounded, somber yet ebullient, always gorgeous. —David Raposa
