QUESTION BRIDGE: BLACK MALES

TUESDAY, SEPT. 8–SATURDAY, NOV. 21, DURHAM

POWER PLANT GALLERY—In 1996, the artist Chris Johnson, who studied with the likes of Ansel Adams and has been collected by major museums, wanted to explore issues of race and class among San Diego's black community. He filmed 10 of its members undertaking frank dialogues about their beliefs and experiences, laying the first struts for Question Bridge. Later, with Hank Willis Thomas, Bayeté Ross Smith and Kamal Sinclair, Johnson crossed the country collecting questions and answers from more than 150 men in eight cities to create this video installation. At a time when the media is frequently talking about black men, it's a great chance to hear some of them express themselves, unfiltered, through media. There are several associated off-site events. Learn more about the show at an artist talk with Bayeté Ross Smith (Sept. 30, Center for Documentary Studies) and add your voice to the mix at a panel and community discussion (Oct. 1, Hayti Heritage Center). The exhibit, part of the Click! Triangle Photography Festival, makes for a Durham trifecta for Thomas, who also has several arresting photo works in the new 21c Museum Hotel show, Seeing Now, and a video installation in Southern Accent: Seeking the American South in Contemporary Art at the Nasher. 11 a.m.–6 p.m. Tues.–Sat. or by appointment, free, 320 Blackwell St., #100, Durham, 919-660-3622, www.powerplantgallery.org. —Brian Howe
