Proselyte, Heron, Merlinus Rusticus

When: Sun., April 7, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $5

This three-band bill mixes and matches its heavy metal elements. Massachusetts' Proselyte starts at atavistic, mid-pace doom but punches it up with sudden thrash sprints, arena-ready harmonies and prog-fan flourishes. Somehow, the songs on their 2011 LP, Sunshine, push those influences toward modern-rock radio reception. New locals Heron aim for the grand black metal thrust of au courant acts like Wolves in the Throne Room and Winterfylleth, but the seams show through the patchwork of darkness. At least their logo is remarkable. Doom purveyors Merlinus Rusticus open. —Grayson Currin
