Promethean Horde, Noctomb, Heron

When: Sun., March 10, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $5

To be a metal band from Tampa, Fla., is to accept the burden of high expectations. Like California's Bay Area, which incubated thrash icons Metallica and Exodus, the Tampa Bay region spawned death metal greats Obituary and Deicide. Promethean Horde mostly avoids hometown baggage, instead finding influence in grandiose European metal. So in the midst of blast-beat acceleration and scathing black metal vocals, the sextet injects synth-symphonic keyboards and folk-metal melodies. Raleigh foursome Heron adopts a similarly expansive approach but hews more closely to the modes of Wolves in the Throne Room or Nachtmystium. Also on the bill is local trio Noctomb. —Bryan C. Reed
