The Durham Savoyards are serving up another timeless Gilbert and Sullivan musical farce, Princess Ida, or Castle Adamant. Based upon the narrative poem The Princess, the piece was written by Alfred Tennyson in 1847 and satirizes women's education, feminism and Darwinism—heated Victorian (and amazingly current) topics of the day. In Gilbert and Sullivan's opera, the protagonist Princess founds a university and teaches that women are superior to men and should rule in their stead. The prince to whom she had been married in infancy sneaks into the university with two friends, aiming to collect his bride. The Durham Savoyards are a treasured local institution, and as usual there's only one weekend to catch them. Show runs through the weekend, nightly through Saturday at 8 p.m. and with a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Admission is $10 on March 24, $15 thereafter. —Christina Cass
