Primus, Dinosaur Jr.

When: Sat., July 18, 6:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $35-$40

Primus and Dinosaur Jr. are tourmates for one of the summer's most surprising treks. Aging rock bands that have both survived revolving doors of members, major-label bust-ups and extended hiatuses, they have, in recent years, returned to what most consider their classic trio configurations. Aside from a general commitment to high volume, though, that's about where the kinship ends. Dinosaur Jr. is the meat of meat-and-potatoes indie rock, with J Mascis' howling distortion smothering the heavy rhythm section at his back and his pitchy voice doing its best to push above it all. Meanwhile, the ever-angular Primus love a good gimmick, evidenced by last year's full-length ode to the world of Willy Wonka. They'll work some of those stunts into what's bound to be a hits-heavy set, as bass zealot Les Claypool now leads the same lineup that made both Pork Soda and Tales from the Punchbowl. This is gonna be one weird street freak scene. 7 p.m., $35–$40, 126 E. Cabarrus St., Raleigh, 919-821-4111, —Grayson Haver Currin
