Re: “Can John Edwards win?

Read Bob Shrum's NO EXCUSES for his account of Edwards lack of discipline as a candidate. When Shrum ran his senate campaign, he was aghast when Edwards couldn't answer questions during his debate prep sessions. Turned out he hadn't read the debate briefing book prepared for him. Elizabeth told Shrum that Edwards doesn't like reading briefing material. Oddly, Shrum thought Edwards would make a good veep nominee. But he was shocked when Edwards couldn't answer questions during his veep debate prep sessions. Turned out he hadn't read his debate prep briefing books. Shrum says he made a panicky call to Kerry just before the debate saying he didn't know if he could go through with it. It's a wonder his performance against Cheney wasn't weaker than it was. Shrum also said that Edwards wouldn't aggressively defend Kerry and counterattack his critics like a running mate is supposed to. Edwards has a strong message and is appealing personally, but he lacks discipline and responsibilty. His glaring blunders so far, including the timing of his play palace mansion, taking a half million buck sweetheart consultancy from a hedge fund that deals in subprime mortgages, and charging his campaign for $400 plus haircuts are of a piece with his history of screw-ups. Shrum spread the word that the charismatic, empathetic Edwards was the new Clinton, but he came to believe that instead he's "a Clinton who hasn't read the books."
