I enjoy Hitchens, but I do believe it is only possible to find him valuable when you take him for who he is, what he offers, and the function he plays in a discussion. Trying to fit him in your own box of understanding the world and expecting "the perfect answer" from him defies the whole of his usefulness and existence. It is kind of like when reading Stephen Hawking books in which he always tangentially touches on the existence of God-never stating whether he really believes in God-and being disappointed in the end because he didn't tell you what you wanted to here, even though he just-as plainly as possible--explained the unified field theory .
