Comedy

François Ozon's film is, first and foremost, a sentimental exercise in reuniting two of the great lions of the last half century of French cinema in a film: Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu. It's the mid-1970s in a provincial factory town and Deneuve is Suzanne Pujol, the heiress to an umbrella factory (google "umbrella" and "Deneuve"). We learn that Deneuve is a "potiche," or trophy wife. She isn't taken seriously by her chauvinist pig of a husband, Robert (Fabrice Luchini), who runs the umbrella factory with a cruel hand. When Deneuve reluctantly steps into what is supposed to be temporary stewardship of the company, her life begins to change in a series of unsurprising events. Ozon seems to be going for an Almodóvar-style woman's picture, but Deneuve is far too regal and restrained to really cut loose like an Almodóvar heroine. Full credit to Katia Wyszkop and Pascaline Chavanne for the riotous 1970s palette.
