Let's be thankful that Jon Shain moved to the Triangle from his native Massachusetts 27 years ago. He came to attend Duke University but stuck around, becoming a major presence in the area's acoustic music scene. In addition to issuing eight solo albums that blend acoustic folk and blues, he often turns up in the studio and on stage supporting fellow local musicians as a ringer on acoustic guitar. By day, he spends much of his time passing on his talents to other aspiring musicians as a guitar teacher.

But perhaps Shain's highest-profile contribution to the community is his annual Post-Turkey Day Jam at Cat's Cradle, now in its 13th year. The jam is a benefit for the Carrboro-based Inter-Faith Council for Social Service, which provides shelter, food, services, advocacy and information to people in need. It also always features some of the Triangle's finest roots-music songwriters and pickers, and this year's lineup may well be the best yet. An opening songwriters-in-the-round session finds John Howie Jr., Brett Harris, Birds and Arrows, Sally Spring and Ted Lyons joining Shain onstage, while a second set brings Backsliders ringleaders Chip Robinson and Steve Howell back together, along with Kickin Grass Band cohorts Lynda Dawson and Pattie Hopkins. —Peter Blackstock
