Barbarians at the plate
"At the request of the White House, silverware will not accompany the table settings."
--An explanation at the bottom of the menu at President Bush's $2,000-a-plate luncheon Monday in Charlotte that raised $1.5 million. According to the Charlotte Observer, silverware wasn't provided for aid in eating the beef tenderloin with golden tomatoes on herb-encrusted baguette and other delights so "the tinkle of silver wouldn't disrupt the President's speech." As a result, "many plates went virtually untouched," according to Observer reporter Jim Morrill.
