PoorQuality: Inequality

When: June 1-Aug. 31 2012
Email: http://artisticallyirrational.ssri.duke.edu

Dan Ariely's new venue opens second show, Poor Quality: Inequality, which runs through Aug. 31. The Center's fascinating curatorial model guarantees two things often lacking in art exhibitions: urgency and relevance. Blending social sciences with art, Ariely facilitates a forum on a topic—in this case, social and economic inequality—in which behavioral research is presented and discussed. Then participating artists apply to make new work off of the forum's topic, and Ariely and co-curator Catherine Howard choose artists from that pool. They have about two months to complete their work. This kind of applied art hopefully sparks insight among viewers that provokes at least a change in mind and at most action in the world outside the exhibition walls. —Chris Vitiello
