So the two candidates are essentially neck and neck in Democratic support, while Pam Hemminger has much stronger support from Republicans (56% v. 28%) and independents/unaffiliated voters (48% v. 23%).

Sounds like the conclusion should be that Hemminger is showing broad-based support, while Kleinschmidt has only succeeded with Democrats -- and about the same number of them prefer his challenger.
