AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE

PLAYMAKERS REPERTORY COMPANY, CHAPEL HILL

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 25–SUNDAY, MAR. 15

The details seem ripped from last year's headlines: A factory pollutes the river outside of a small resort town, and a doctor tries to blow the whistle when the contamination reaches the medicinal springs. But before he can alert the public, his supervisors and the owners of the resort will have something to say about his findings. So will the local politicians and the gatekeepers at the town newspaper. Arthur Miller's taut, suspenseful adaptation of Ibsen's classic is a caustic cautionary study of the First Amendment, and a calculating look at those who attempt to control public opinion and the methods by which they do. In his foreword, Miller notes how easy it is to suspend freedom of speech in a time of crisis, concluding, "those who attempt to warp the truth ... must inevitably become warped and corrupted themselves." Newcomer Michael Bryan French stars in this still too-timely drama, directed by frequent guest Tom Quaintance. 7:30 p.m. Tues.–Sat.; 2 p.m. Sat.–Sun., $15–$52, 150 Country Club Rd., Chapel Hill, 919-962-7529, www.playmakersrep.org.
