Playin' Possum: A Tribute to George Jones

When: Sat., May 30, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $12-$17

More than a dozen local musicians will step to the microphone to deliver the songs of George Jones for "Playin' Possum," a tribute to the contentious and brilliant country balladeer. But the night's curator (and perhaps the Triangle's best crooner) John Howie Jr. will sing more than most, as he hopes to shine some light on several Jones favorites. "It's not narcissism as much as it is me being selfish," Howie offers with a laugh. "This is just another opportunity for me to sing more great George Jones songs I've always wanted to sing." Area standbys like Dex Romweber, Kenny Roby and Sarah Shook will lead an augmented seven-piece version of Howie's band, The Rosewood Bluff. Howie hopes this will be the first of many such homages, with tributes to less-acclaimed country greats to come. To that end, don't expect all of The Possum's old hits, as Howie hopes to expose the audience to some of Jones' best but somewhat overlooked material. "There are some big numbers we're leaving out," he says. "I wanted it to be a special show, not something that would happen on a cable TV network." 8 p.m., $12–$17, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-929-2787, Haver Currin
