Pipe, Bustello, Bastages

When: Sat., Jan. 15, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Don't overlook openers Bustello in favor of the beer-can-crushing Pipe. Bustello's pub rock-meets-rockabilly pop sounds deceptively simple, probably because of the sheer tightness of this band. Early '90s punk vets Pipe have reunited several times, but no one has called excessive reunion foul yet, probably because there's been an absence of "memory lane" hokum. Oh, and they're a live riot. In contrast to Pipe's rough-and-tumble flippancy, middle act the Bastages offer unapologetic social commentary: "Gun Man" is a Dead Kennedys-esque critique of the heavily armed. —Corbie Hill
