Pinche Gringo, Last Year's Men, SOON

When: Sat., Feb. 1, 10 p.m. 2014

Pinche Gringo is the on-and-off, mostly solo handle of garage-rock journeyman Joshua Johnson; he takes a break from drumming in the newly re-energized Paint Fumes for this one-man-band stand. Removed from the Fumes' full-band bluster, Johnson chops rock 'n' roll to its foundations, hollering over basic blues riffs and a spare backbeat on drums played with his feet. Last Year's Men don't expand the template much further, but the Chapel Hill quartet's sheer volume allows opportunities for more melodic diversions and psychedelic dalliances. Their thrilling live shows continue to introduce new songs, preambles to the still-in-limbo follow-up to 2010's Sunny Down Snuff. —Bryan C. Reed
