PILOBOLUS

DURHAM PERFORMING ARTS CENTER, DURHAM

THURSDAY, JUNE 18–SATURDAY, JUNE 20

Venezuelan choreographer Javier de Frutos received an Olivier Award in England for a 2007 West End revival of Cabaret. He also received audience protests, death threats and BBC censorship after his 2009 work Eternal Damnation to Sancho and Sanchez featured a deformed pope and pregnant nuns ("Ill-mannered, ill-conceived and barkingly offensive," sniped the Financial Times). Some de Frutos works are soaked in blood. Others pay homage to Pet Shop Boys. Why should you care? Because the American Dance Festival has paired the combustible choreographer with Pilobolus, the 44-year-old proverbial gateway drug of modern dance. The company has struggled to remain relevant in recent years, in uneven, high-profile collaborations with the likes of Maurice Sendak, OK Go and Penn & Teller (in the dismal [esc], mercifully pulled at the last minute from this program), but this one could really go out of bounds. ADF calls the new Thresh/Hold "physically daring ... raging and tender, desolate and intimate." See you at the world premiere. 8 p.m. Thurs.–Fri.; 1 and 7 p.m. Sat., 123 Vivian St., Durham, $19.25–$58, 919-680-2787, www.americandancefestival.org. —Byron Woods
