Re: “How Raleigh’s election was hijacked by questions of vibrancy

Our city council elections are the sort of bought and paid for theater I've come to expect from living in what Jimmy Carter says is not a democracy. The people get to vote in only one precinct, while the money gets to vote everywhere - the fabled 'free market' I guess. Since most of our candidates strike me as little more than prostitutes pimped to the development community, why should I be surprised for them to service their customers?

Re: “Residents aren’t buying Raleigh’s plans for East College Park

Get real Jane. Gentrification hasn't plagued any planning department anywhere. Gentrification means higher tax revenues, and that is the sole concern of the City of Raleigh, to serve the interests of those who fund elections to the dis-benefit of ordinary residents. Just check out Moore Square and surrounds for a clue to what they want.

We are so lucky to have caring people like Ms. Broders in our community and teaching our kids.

Re: “Too little music, too much noise on the street

Thanks for the great perspective on Josephus Daniels. I have been disappointed in the N&O's superficial handling of their founder's legacy, and saddened at the failure of Raleigh and Wake County civic leaders to remove his statue from the public square, and rename the public school for young children that honors him. I find it ironic that the Daniels school is located on a road code named by freed slaves for Oberlin College, a station on the Underground Railroad. And it is puzzling that the term "progressive" can be applied to those N&O writers who apologize for torture, serve as war cheerleaders, turn a blind eye towards rendition flights from North Carolina, and thoughtfully identify themselves as death penalty doubters. My wife and I were about to renew, but after reading your column, we decided to instead cancel our N&O subscription. We are better served by the Indy for local news and opinion and the Internet for the rest.
