Peter Rizzolo

When: Sun., Aug. 11, 2-3 p.m. 2013
Aside from being the author of a novel called Forbidden Harvest, writer Peter Rizzolo is pretty fascinating. A longtime professor of family medicine at the UNC School of Medicine, he got a master's degree in English at N.C. State after retirement and applied those skills toward this book. The story concerns a 13-year-old boy in dire need of a heart transplant, and how a doctor experimenting with preserving human organs for transplant winds up going to extreme—and less than legal—means to help him when the hospital he works for refuses to condone his experiments. We're kind of hoping this wasn't based on real life. —Zack Smith
