Comedy, Drama

Sam (Chris Pine) reluctantly returns home for his father's funeral and discovers Frankie (Elizabeth Banks), the only person who didn't think Dad was an S.O.B. He stalks her and her precocious son (Michael Hall D'Addario, in a bowl haircut qualifying as child abuse) while searching for answers among the 8-tracks, LPs and the cherry-red Mercury Marquis his father left behind. People Like Us is a '70s-style family drama, glossed with 2010s sentiment, about two generations of slutty moms and their angry sons. There is hugging and learning, but refreshingly, it's not about romance. The film has a strong sense of place in its evocations of the L.A. music scene of the '70s and '80s and the splintered families that emerged from the wreckage of rock 'n' roll dreams. The film, written and directed by Alex Kurtzman and "inspired by true events," is, thanks to Pine and Banks, better than the sappy trailer.
