Paws for Applause

When: Sat., June 12, 12 p.m. 2010
Price: $20 per pet

It's time to trot out your pooch's most winsome costume and head over to the Carolina Theatre for a pet-themed fashion show and parade fundraiser to benefit three local nonprofit organizations: the Carolina Theatre, Durham ASPCA and Independent Animal Rescue.

"We wanted to do something that would bring in a different demographic to the theater," said organizer Chris Crabtree. "And we thought a fun and theatrical way to do that would be by having a pet contest that could broaden our horizons and raise awareness about what we're doing to enrich the community here at the theater."

The challenge, canine owners, is originality and costume creativity. Your pet may be a superhero, fairy or punkster—or what about Laika? If you think your pooch would rock a cardboard rocket costume with moon-paw boots, then maybe you could win one of the six categories: Best Smile, Best "Match Your Pet," Best Behaved, Best Outfit, Best Theme and, of course, Best in Show.

Emceeing the show will be Mr. Rainbow the Clown, and photos of the top 12 winners, will be made into a calendar that will be available at the Carolina Theatre for purchase. Ten percent of each ticket goes directly to the Durham ASPCA and the Independent Animal Rescue.—Rebekah L. Cowell
