Paul Simon

When: Thu., Dec. 1, 7:30 p.m. 2011

To call Paul Simon a living legend would be to sell the man short. Whether teaming up with longtime partner Art Garfunkel on sparse, striking folk or on his more adventurous, genre-defying solo efforts, Simon has not only been a cultural icon and a voice of a generation but an influence on folk songwriters, eclectic indie rock outfits and, really, the way Western listeners perceive the wide world of music. Across a six-decade career, Simon's natural curiosity has led him to search relentlessly for new angles by which to examine pop and folk music. So Beautiful or So What, Simon's latest, reaches heights he hasn't achieved since Graceland—his landmark, Grammy-winning 1986 world beat album—and 1990's underrated follow-up, The Rhythm of the Saints. Its success is largely due to a renewed attempt to fuse global folk styles, all married to well-rendered reflections on spirituality. His show will draw several cuts from So What, of course, but expect selections to span Simon's entire career, including songs recorded with Garfunkel and most of his biggest solo hits. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are sold out. —Spencer Griffith
