Patty Larkin, Peter Mulvey

When: Thu., Jan. 6, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $18-21
Though she's a product of the fertile New England folk scene, Patty Larkin's music isn't as self-conscious and delicate as that of her peers. Which isn't to say she's not capable of pretty balladry, she certainly is. But there's frequently a gritty, soulful undercurrent to her music. It's well-informed by the blues, and her picking and slide guitar playing (both electric and acoustic) are particularly skillful. She taps a jazzy swing from time to time and isn't easy to corral stylistically. Her latest album, 25, celebrates a quarter-century of releases via fresh recordings of her best love songs with guests including Lucy Kaplansky, Rosanne Cash and Suzanne Vega. Peter Mulvey opens at 8 p.m. —Chris Parker
