Sure, Patty Griffin has gotten a lot of attention for her involvement with artists exponentially more famous than she is. Dixie Chicks fans know the singer-songwriter best for penning “Top of the World,” covered by the trio on their multi-Platinum album Home, and Robert Plant admirers are hip to her by virtue of Griffin having been both Plant’s singing partner and paramour. But the albums Griffin’s been turning out for two decades seamlessly intertwine folk, pop, and rock influences into a sound that’s not necessarily Americana, but still too naturalistic to really fit in anywhere else. Simultaneously artful and organic, her songs sound like they exist in real time and space, but they’re too carefully crafted to have simply emerged from the soil. Like hothouse flowers, they’re the kind of thing that needs to be tended in order to grow. Fortunately, Griffin has always been a very attentive gardener. —Jim Allen
