Re: “In Memory of Matt Brown: John Howie Jr., Mike Nicholson and Brian Hill remember their friend and drummer

I don't remember the date or time that I first met Matt. I don't even remember who introduced us. What I do remember is when Semi-Professional Bowlers was in need of a drummer, he showed up at my house wearing a Circle Jerks tour shirt, from the Wonderful tour. That was one of my first shows growing up and I still have the shirt.

From the minute that Matt sat behind the drums, SPB changed. We had a few members leave the band, Saturday Practice. Matt and I stayed constant. We cut two tapes and went on tour across the west coast. Your was a life changing time and we grew closer than ever. He balanced my insanity and I his.

After tour we went threw a few more bass players, but the band continued. It wasn't until Matt moved that SPB ceased to exist.

Replacing Matt wasn't easy. How do you audition a new best friend? A new brother? It could not be done.

I remember the first audition. John, the guitarist, said that I scared the guy senseless. He could not wait to get out of the van and away from the insanity that he faced. Replacing Matt could not be done. Nothing else sounded right. No one else could handle the pressure. The music stopped making sense.

I am proud to have played with such a talented musician. I will always remember your huge drumsticks and horse head gong. When my right ear rings at the same frequency as your crash, I will now welcome the noise. It will serve to remind me that I can be a better person.
