Passion Pit, Black Joe Lewis

When: Fri., Oct. 29, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $10-25

Kudos to UNC for picking a homecoming headliner that makes sense. The sweetly anthemic Passion Pit appeases the loudest rallying cries of students looking for campus entertainment—"Give me something I've heard of!" and "Give me something that's cool!" More important, though, is how well this Massachusetts quintet lives up to the credo of nearly all energetic 20-somethings: "Give me something I can dance to!" With synths that glide easily from complacent mood setting to bold arena salvos, the band pumps out sing-along choruses and throbbing bass lines ready-made for post-midterm hullabaloo. The sensual sway of Black Joe Lewis' soulful blues-rock should prove an apt, if oddly matched, warm-up for the rave that follows. —Jordan Lawrence
