Horror, Suspense/Thriller

In an effort to breathe life into this franchise, Christopher Landon moves the action out of the suburbs and into a Latino neighborhood in Oxnard, Calif. What could be cynically called a marketing move surprisingly works. Landon provides an enjoyable new chapter by introducing humorous elements: Gone is the Ouija board, as is the bickering of the various inhabitants of early entrie. (In their place: two young actors who exhibit charisma and camaraderie.) The scares are still here, but Landon fills the script with moments of black comedy, letting the film wink at its audience as much as Paramount would ever allow.
