In this installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise, the year is 1988 and the two leading stars, Katie (Katie Featherston in PA1) and Kristi (Sprague Grayden in PA2) are grade school kids (played respectively by Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown) occupied with Teddy Ruxpin and an invisible entity named Toby. It's this imaginary friend who's the problem. Kristi swears he's real but mom and sister just won't believe her. Following a similar approach as its predecessors, mom's boyfriend Dennis, a SoCal wedding videographer, attempts to remedy the situation by capturing video footage of Toby in action. Directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish) work hard to drag out the suspense through constrained points of view (a camera placed on an oscillating fan gives us spaced out views of the action) but mostly the paranormal teases are old hat and static.
