Oren Peli's original tale of demonic possession hit mostly minor chords with audiences, limited by its narrow psychological pull. The sequel, functioning also as a prequel, is a subtly stronger version of the original as it weaves in the backstory of original protagonists, Katie and Micah. The conceit is the same; we are privy to "found" home video footage shot within the confines of a SoCal two-story home. The dwelling is inhabited by Katie's sister, Kristi who has just given birth to a new son, Hunter. Along with late night baby cries comes strange floor-shaking bumps, thuds and slamming doors alluding to a sinister demonic presence. Director Tod Williams is adroit in expanding the visual aesthetic of the original and creating a nuanced tension as we follow the family into the dangerous territory of possession and the even more terrifying terrorization of a vulnerable toddler. Still, a less-than-imaginative ending inhibits this franchise's promising strides in the right direction.
