For the bulk of its 45 minutes, Paramore's third album, 2009's Brand New Eyes, is a meticulously constructed, well written, smartly produced power pop-punk spree. Brazen frontwoman Hayley Williams leads the quintet through slinking mid-tempo chimers ("Turn It Off"), ascendant pop choppers ("All I Wanted") and churning, martial anthems ("Ignorance"). The rhythmic shifts are interesting, and the dual guitar interplay is much more considered than the band's tween-plus demographic might suggest. But the highlight, or the moment that proves Williams and company have longevity at their grasp, is "The Only Exception." Sung more tenderly than anything Jenny Lewis has ever attempted, and played with a riveting acoustic grace that points to the band's Tennessee roots, it's sort of a perfect ballad—bittersweet and charming, with a hook that won't stop digging. Tegan & Sara open. —Grayson Currin
