Paradise of Bachelors Dance Party

When: Sat., Feb. 19, 10 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

Jason Perlmutter and Brendan Greaves met by accident two years ago while independently doing research on David Lee, an underappreciated artist/ producer in Cleveland County. Lee, unaccustomed to kids poking around with such interest in his life's work, confused the two and spurred their introduction. Both former WXYC DJs, Perlmutter and Greaves became fast friends before founding Paradise of Bachelors, their boutique record label committed to good vinyl and compelling stories. Last fall they released their first album, Said I Had a Vision: Songs & Labels of David Lee, 1960–1988. Their first pressing of 500 records sold out. As pleased as they were with that accomplishment, it was only the start: "We are even prouder because in the fall, encouraged by the LP, the 75-year-old David Lee decided to end a lengthy hiatus from music, singing twice at concerts in Shelby," Perlmutter says.

On Friday, Perlmutter and Greaves celebrate the re-pressing of that record and their new deal as exclusive distributor of the remaining stock of the original 1984 vinyl pressing of Tobacco a-Go-Go, a stellar compilation of '60s N.C. garage and psych. As for the dance party, Greaves (or Baldhead Growler, as he's known on the decks) guarantees "a good time and plenty of tunes you haven't heard, plus some you might recognize from dreams." The free throwdown begins at 10 p.m. —Ashley Melzer
