Action/Adventure, SciFi/Fantasy

Director Joe Wright achieves something special with his bitter steampunk re-imagining of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan: He’s made a kids movie that’s not really for kids at all. As dark themes build—fascism, child trafficking, pixie dust abuse—it’s clear that this isn’t your standard fairy tale. And that’s before the Nirvana and Ramones songs kick in. Hugh Jackman plays the heavy, a drug-addled interdimensional slave trader, with Garrett Hedlund and Rooney Mara joining newcomer Levi Miller as the good guys. The CGI turns hallucinogenic in some sequences, and grown-ups should enjoy all the freaky visual design gambits. But young kids may sense the bleakness behind the slapstick fights. I liked the movie; my second-grader, not so much.
