It's been less than a year since Paint Fumes released the debut LP Uck Life. It showcased the rough and roaring Charlotte trio in its finest form, detonating bare-bones garage rock that consisted of punchy singles and longer songs that reveled in sprawling aggression, as though Ty Segall performed only in a drunken rage. Backed by the respected Slovenly Recordings, Paint Fumes prepared to tour across the U.S. and Europe.

Life had other plans. In February, a car struck singer and guitarist Elijah Von Cramon as he crossed the street near his home. His skull was cracked, his pelvis fractured. Paint Fumes' coming-out tour was canceled, and Cramon holed up to recover.

Cramon rebounded to record a solo album during his downtime and performed locally with The Rolling Lords, a backing band that joined him in wheelchairs. With the support—both moral and monetary—from a series of benefits across the state, he's healthy and reinvigorated. This fall trek will take Paint Fumes around the East Coast and down to Puerto Rico. On Halloween, they return to Raleigh, back from the dead and ready to celebrate. —Jordan Lawrence
