Paddy Moloney & the Chieftains

When: Sun., March 13, 7 p.m. 2011
Price: $26-$49.50

These ambassadors of Irish folk music have not only spread the word for nearly half a century but also helped popularize the style worldwide, opening the door for everyone from Riverdance to Solas. While traditionalists, they're hardly purists. In fact, their willingness to collaborate with a wide variety of artists—including Luciano Pavarotti, Tom Jones, the Rolling Stones, Madonna and Elvis Costello—has encouraged the style to move. Those artists provide what the Chieftans lack—that is, a singer. The quartet is led by 72-year-old Paddy Moloney, the sole remaining original member. Their latest, San Patricio, addresses the Mexican-American war of the mid-19th century and features Ry Cooder. Tickets to the 7 p.m. concert run $26–$49.50. —Chris Parker
