A love letter to the 12-year-old in everyone, Guillermo del Toro's big, brawling sci-fi flick is simply a great summer movie. The giant robots vs. giant monsters epic isn't deep, but it doesn't have an ounce of fat on it either. As the commander of the last line of defense against the gigantic "kaiju", The Wire's Idris Elba—trading in "Stringer Bell" for a character named "Stacker Pentacost"—is as imposing as any 250-foot-tall battlebot. For all the special effects, at its core Pacific Rim is about relationships, whether it's brothers and sons, fathers and daughters, or the sweet rocket-propelled fist of a giant mech slamming into the skull of a 25-story lizard. Oh no, there goes Tokyo.
