Re: “Updated: State votes to revoke charter for Raleigh's Dynamic Community school

If the SBE is concerned about safety for our kids with special needs then they better start closing down their public schools too. Parents of children with special needs remove their kids from public schools because of the bullying and trauma they experience there. Our kids are segregated within the public schools despite the fact that they are sitting in an inclusive classroom. Many feel invisible and are not getting the support they need to be successful in an inclusive classroom setting. Regular education teachers are not trained to work with these kids and many don't want them in their classes. Also, there are not enough EC teachers to go into the classroom to assist these kids. Our kids feel isolated and alone. They are not given the same opportunities to thrive in an inclusive classroom setting, not to mention the bullying they endure on a daily bases! Money follows kids who have IEPs. It is obvious those funds are not going to our kids! Schools like Dynamic Community Charter School and PACE Academy serve a need for kids who are marginalized and underserved in the public school system. Our kids are not being served so we as parents have chosen to send them to schools that know how to teach them. They are thriving in these schools. They are accepted in these schools. The erosion of trust is not with Dynamic Community Charter School or PACE Academy it is with those in power at the State level. Our schools are being squeezed out. The State held back funds due to trumped up allegations about attendance records. PACE Academy has served students for over 10 years. Not one time during those 10 years did anyone from the SBE visit our school. No complaints have ever been filed about our schools. Dynamic was in its first year, but never had a chance to get off the ground before they were bombarded with false and trumped up allegations. Survey the parents. Survey the kids. Parents were happy and kids were happy. They were finally succeeding and weere being given the chance they deserve. There is an agenda here that needs to be examined. This is not about special needs parents wanting to segregate their kids. We would love to have our kids be fully included and fully accepted in the public schools, but our public school system is failing our children. Our public school system is causing more harm for our children. If the SBE cared about our kids safety they would address it right in their own back yard. We would also like our kids to be served in charter schools that don't cater primarily to kids with special needs or vulnerable populations, but the reality is those charter schools don't want our kids either. They have limited resources and our kids do not do well there. Charter schools don't have to have the same types of resources for our kids as the public school has to have so if they limit the EC resources then our kids won't come. Just listen to the word on the street. Every parent of a special needs kid knows what charter school serves our kids and which ones don't. I can tell you it is slim pickings in our fare state. The truth is NC SBE wants to segregate charter schools for the elite and white. They want to keep those tests scores high! See the article below for the facts on NC charter schools and segregation. They don't want the money that goes with our kids to go to the charter schools like Dynamic or PACE. They are looking for any reason they can find to shut our schools down as we don't fit the profile of their segregated white charter schools. This is about power and control. This is bullying at its most extreme. Perhaps the SBE is hoping by revoking Dynamic's and PACE's charters our kids will now attend their new virtual charter school Directed by Joel Medley, the former Director of the Office of Charter Schools. It just happens Joel Medley prompted the investigation into PACE two years ago, made a lot of public allegations and then contributed to the revoking of PACE's Charter, The media should find it interesting that almost immediately after revoking PACE's Charter on 5/13 and renewing plans to revoke Dynamic's Charter on the same day (SBE put this on the agenda at the end of the 5/13 meeting without letting Dyamic know), Mr. Medley resigns and announces his new role with the virtual charter school. Perhaps instead of focusing on these two charter schools and these false allegations, we need some investigative reporting into the hidden agendas and coruption of those on the SBE. The public deserves to know the truth. The SBE does not want our kids in the public schools nor in their charter schools. They want the money that follows our kids, but they don't want our kids. A virtual charter school would be a great place to keep them hidden away. The issue here is not segregation it is discrimination on the part of the SBE. By closing these two schools, they are going to cause considerable harm to our children. Many of the kids who attend these two schools are alive today, feeling more confident than ever before because of the support and acceptance they have received from the teachers and staff at Dynamic and PACE. The SBE knows by closing these two school parents of special needs kids have no more options. As parents of kids who have been bullied, how can we send our kids back to the very public schools that failed them? This would only harm them worse. It would be abuse! Other charter schools in the area are no longer an option as their lotteries are closed and they have long wait lists. The only options left are home school our kids, send them to private schools - both of which are next to impossible for families of kids with special needs OR we could send them to the new virtual charter school. Not on your life Mr. Medley! I will fight this tooth and nail. The truth will be exposed. My son will continue to thrive at PACE next year! I encourage the families of the Dynamic Charter School to rally together and fight this injustice!! We need an over haul in the SBE. We need folks who care more about our kids than they do about their own agendas and the power and control they seek. Stand up a fight! Let the truth be exposed for what it really is!

Let's look at segregation and charter schools in NC - has anyone read this?
