Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique

When: Sat., Nov. 12, 8 p.m. and Sun., Nov. 13, 7:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $25-59

Three Gs and an E-flat don't seem like much, but the powerful opening phrase of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony has come to represent capital-R Romanticism for aficionados as well as folks whose classical music listening consists of cartoon soundtracks. The world's foremost interpreters of Beethoven perform two programs of his work in two nights, including the Fifth on Sunday. Chapel Hill is the first of only four U.S. dates on the London-based Orchestre Révolutionnaire Romantique's tour. Conductor and founder Sir John Eliot Gardiner is electric with the baton, sometimes wearing a black Mao tunic with colorful cuffs flashing around his wrists. The Saturday date concludes with the Eroica symphony, featuring its stirring, funereal second movement. Shows are at 8 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday; tickets run $25–$59, or $10 for UNC students. —Chris Vitiello
