Opera in the Pines

When: Sat., May 17, 7 p.m. 2014
Is there a more pleasant large venue to visit in the state than Koka Booth Amphitheatre, especially during the daily gloaming at this time of the year, before the ground bakes and the mosquitoes conspire? With or without kids in tow, you can't best this setting for both a picnic by the lake and a musical evening. Maestro Timothy Myers takes advantage of the scene to further the North Carolina Opera's mission of bringing opera to the people. He conducts singers Hailey Clark, Kate Farrar, Noah Stewart and Ted Federle through a casual program of arias and Broadway show tunes form-fitted for families—80 minutes, no intermission. Gates open at 5 p.m., and lawn seating is free for those under 14. Pack a Frisbee and sip cocktails from the Thermos as the kids exercise until the music starts. —Chris Vitiello
