Onward Soldiers CD release, Hammer No More the Fingers

When: Thu., Jan. 26, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $8-10

Wilmington's Onward, Soldiers are quickly distinguishing themselves as one of the more restless rock acts in the state. Their 2010 debut, Ghosts in this Town, showed them to be an amped-up Southern rock outfit, pairing Avett Brothers-inspired rave-ups with swampy Creedence Clearwater Revival riffs. The new follow-up, Monsters, alters their palette considerably. It's a dark, mercurial ride, shifting from twisted Tom Waits folk rock to bouncy piano ballads and on to slide-powered honky-tonk. It's a tad scattershot, but their mastery of multiple styles is impressive. Hammer No More the Fingers opens. —Jordan Lawrence
