Concert, Documentary

A documentary that is as empty and vapid as the subject's radio-friendly songs, One Direction: This Is Us is only the latest in a long line of films dedicated to whoever is at the top of the charts in a given year. As with movies about Justin Bieber and Katy Perry, the filmmaker (in this case, a slumming Morgan Spurlock) don't delve deeply into the cost of privacy in exchange for fame. Only in small scenes with the parents of the group members, in which it is said tearfully that they sent their child out for an audition only to find that they come home for five days in the years since, does a genuine human moment present itself.
