Oliver North

When: Thu., Nov. 21, 7 p.m. 2013
Either a national hero or a traitor to democracy, depending on who you talk to and how conservative they are, Oliver North was one of the most controversial figures of the 1980s. He was a perpetual Doonesbury punchline for his role in the Iran-Contra affair, a bit of covert political maneuvering that involved selling weapons to Iran to free hostages in Lebanon, then diverting proceeds to Manuel Noriega to aid right-wing forces in South America. North then covered this up and lied about it to Congress, but his felony conviction was later overturned and the charges were dropped.

Since then, he's been an odd and divisive figure; check out the 1996 documentary A Perfect Candidate, which chronicles his unsuccessful run for the United States Senate. North's in town to promote American Heroes on the Homefront: The Hearts of Heroes, co-written with former Marine and FBI agent Bob Hamer. The somewhat redundantly titled book chronicles the personal stories of American troops headed out for deployment and those adjusting to their return home, often with crippling injuries they must adapt to in their everyday lives. —Zack Smith
