Old Habits, The Preservation

When: Tue., July 20 2010
Price: $5

Thanks to a little personnel tweaking in the past few months, Raleigh's Old Habits transformed itself from a traditional bluegrass quintet into, well, something not entirely different. Guitar, banjo and upright bass still stand proudly out front, but drums have usurped fiddle and mandolin. Indeed, the biggest difference is the shuffling sound of brushed snare, mellowing the awe of fast picking by inviting listeners to dance. The freshly streamlined quartet reveals stronger country ties as it ventures more into the new grass camp—not a bad thing, especially with the band's trusty vocal harmonies remaining intact. Old habits, new tricks. Austin-based The Preservation, a sort of psychedelic Wilco, opens at 8 p.m. —Andrew Ritchey
