Paperhand Puppet Intervention reminds us that when one is looking at humanity, it sometimes helps to take the long view—like that of the giant tortoise, which can live for more than two and a half centuries. In Paperhand's eighteenth-annual summer puppetry pageant at the Forest Theatre in Chapel Hill, fantastical masked stilt-walkers, vividly painted papier-mâché puppets, and multistory marionettes operated by multiple people examine present-day humans from the viewpoints of the time-tested tortoise, the dubious kiwi, and that uncanny mimic, the lyrebird. Then the Paperhand Band ushers us into the Circus of Beginnings and Ends, in which we contemplate the environmental wonders and challenges of our times. Of Wings and Feet also continues into the fall with runs at the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Carolina Theatre of Greensboro. —Byron Woods
