Drama

Lars von Trier's epic treatise on sexual addiction—so long it was released in two parts—had an intriguing start in Volume I. The defiant Joe (an excellent Charlotte Gainsbourg, returning from the harrowing Antichrist) recounted her libertine history to the curious Seligman (a charming Stellan Skarsgård), who offered digressions into math and fishing. But as Joe's sexual addiction turns violent in Vol. II, necessitating ever more extreme transgressions, the plot sails beyond believability. This wouldn't be a problem—Von Trier's characters are always sock-puppets who speak in his own didactic voice—if the director, a master stylist, had more to say. Full of fleeting, fascinating ideas, the film lacks a revelatory overall point about the power of women's sexuality and the fear it engenders in men. Von Trier, often accused of misogyny, expresses a surprisingly sympathetic view of Joe's exploits. But my God—what does he have against Gainsbourg's genitals?
