Re: “State eugenics task force hears from survivors; report on possible compensation due Aug. 1

I am not a parent, which was an informed and considered choice I made in my late 20s. But I'd be dang PO'd if some stranger made that decision for me.

Now, I am closing in on 50 and see my friends and family who are my age and older and what a joy their children and grandchildren are to them. All the parents know personally recall the birth of their child(ren) as the most meaningful day(s) of their lives.

I'm also the little sister of one who some might call "feebleminded." She is intellectually disabled, as mental health professionals use that lable today. She also is hardworking, loving, honest, and law abiding.

I was my sister's coach during her son's birth. That remains the most vivid memory and meaningful day of MY life and I wasn't even a parent! When he was born, she kept saying, "My son, my son!" I can still FEEL her utter joy and "hear" her words from that day. He's 21 now, in college, doing well, and remains the greatest joy of her life. He knows his mum loves him deeply and did her best for him throughout his childhood, despite the challenges of being a single mum, abandoned by his "father" as soon as the "man" learned she was with child.

To you parents, how much would it cost to compensate YOU for the government having denied your right, NOT privilege, to bear and rear YOUR child(ren)?

As you look into your children's and grandchildren's eyes, is $20,000 really too much for the people of NC to say "I'm sorry" to the few (less than 3000) who survive this tragedy?
