Now You See Me

When: March 17-26 2011
Price: $15-17

Perhaps one of the unmistakable signs of entering middle age is an enveloping awareness of cancer. Suddenly, it seems that it's everywhere. Parents get sick with it, long-admired artists die, friends die prematurely. Every year, half a million Americans, and 7.5 million worldwide, die of some form of cancer. Writers as various as Barbara Ehrenreich, Susan Sontag and Christopher Hitchens—all with firsthand knowledge—have noted and often deplored the curious argot that has arisen around the affliction, where cancer sufferers, by turning their bodies into repositories for toxic chemicals and radiation, become courageous battlers. In his new play Now You See Me, Duke University playwright Neal Bell offers his own take on the culture of cancer—and reality television. Under the direction of Jody McAuliffe, we meet Claire, recently diagnosed with cancer, who elects to fight her battle on national television. The run begins Thursday, March 17, at 8:15 with a "pay what you can" preview, and officially opens Friday, March 18, and continues through March 26. —David Fellerath
